Chinook Maps

Terms of use

Last updated: 3 September 2026

1. What this is

Chinook Maps is a map and navigation app built from Canadian public data. It is provided as-is, for your personal use.

2. Navigation is advice, not instruction

This is the term that matters most, so it is not buried.

Chinook Maps plans routes from government road data and from turn restrictions inferred from posted traffic signage. That inference is good but it is not complete, and the app says so in About as well as here.

You are driving. Obey the road, the signs and the law — not the app.

Specifically, and without limiting the above:

otherwise. The posted limit on the road is the limit.

Do not use this app in a way that requires you to look at a screen while driving.

3. Accounts

An account is optional. You may create one to sync saved places between your own devices.

You agree to provide an email address you control, to keep your password to yourself, and not to use an account to store anything unlawful. We may suspend an account being used to attack the service or other people.

You can delete your account at any time from inside the app. See the Privacy Policy.

4. Map data and licences

Map data comes from the Government of Canada and the City of Calgary under open government licences (OGL — Canada, OGL — City of Calgary). Those licences require acknowledgement, which the app carries in About.

Neither the Government of Canada nor the City of Calgary endorses this application, and nothing here should be read as suggesting otherwise. Errors in the map are ours, not theirs.

5. No warranty

Chinook Maps is provided "as is", without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the app will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that the map is accurate or complete.

6. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or any loss of profits, data, or goodwill, arising from your use of or inability to use Chinook Maps.

Nothing here excludes liability that cannot lawfully be excluded. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain exclusions, and in those places the exclusions apply only so far as the law permits. If you are a consumer in Quebec, your rights under the Consumer Protection Act are unaffected.

7. Changes

These terms may change. Material changes will be surfaced in the app before taking effect. Continuing to use Chinook Maps after that means you accept the new terms.

8. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Alberta and the federal laws of Canada applicable there, without regard to conflict-of-law rules.
